A vast, yet scattered and sometimes sporadic, network of CCTV cameras capture our lives on a daily basis – constantly rolling, relaying and recording our daily lives.

Movements are constantly monitored; this is real life in real time.

Shots and angles are predefined, mug shot views – street shots, entering ticket gates, funnelled perspectives down escalators, an individual lost in the crowds on the platform. Line of sight switches from front to back to side, one image expanding to two, three and more split screens as our movement intersect with multiple cameras. Each frame united by time, as seconds scowl by in the bottom corner of the recording. The date and location of our passing recorded and held.

It may be fuzzy, but it’s not fiction.

Under the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) and the Governments Information Commissioner’s Office CCTV Code of Practice:“Individuals whose images are recorded have a right to view the images of themselves an… be provided with a copy of the images”. Under the act third party identities have to be obscured / blurred as to not cause unwarranted harm or distress by unfair intrusion into an individuals privacy.
